Known for its sweet, melancholic whistle, this bird earned the nickname Wiwik Melankolis. You will probably hear it before you see it—it’s shy and loves hiding in dense leaves. It’s found in various places, such as secondary forests, farmlands, and city parks. 

Males show off gray feathers with a pop of orange on the chest, while females lean toward reddish-brown. The population’s still stable, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled!

2. Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier)

Love birds that are lively and chatty? Then this little guy, known locally as Cucak Kutilang, might be your fave. It’s one of the more common birds of Bali and often hangs out in gardens, fruit orchards, and roadside trees. 

Its bold white eyebrow and cheerful chirping make it stand out. Super adaptable, it eats fruit, nectar, and even small bugs. Some even build nests near people’s homes—bringing a touch of wildlife right to your doorstep.

3. Spotted Dove (Spilopelia chinensis)

Chill and elegant, this dove is easy to spot with its black-and-white necklace—it looks like it’s wearing a natural string of pearls. You will often see it strolling through parks or rice fields, pecking at seeds on the ground. 

Its soft, rhythmic coo is the peaceful sound you want on a lazy morning.  

4. Olive-backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis)

This is one of the tiniest but flashiest tiny birds in Bali. The males flaunt a shiny, bluish-purple chest and a bright yellow belly. They zip from flower to flower, sipping nectar with their curved beaks like pros. 

FYI, they’re natural pollinators, so you will often spot their cute little nests in gardens or even hanging outside your room!

5. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)

Ever seen a white bird chilling on the back of a buffalo? That’s the Cattle Egret! These birds love tagging along with cattle to snack on bugs stirred up from the grass. During the breeding season, their sleek white feathers get a touch of orange around the head and chest—super stylish! 

They’re social creatures, usually seen in groups, and love open, wet areas like rice fields. The good news is that they’re not endangered, either. 

6. Javan Pond Heron (Ardeola speciosa)

This bird’s like a natural shapeshifter. Outside mating season, it rocks a plain brownish look that blends into the background. But come breeding time? Total glow-up: vibrant orange, grey-blue, and white feathers. 

They hang around paddies and shallow ponds, patiently stalking fish and bugs. They’re migratory, so you might catch them at different times of the year.  

7. Edible-nest Swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus)

Famous for its edible nests used in pricey soups, this fast-flying bird is pretty fascinating. You will often see them darting around high up in the Bali sky, making quick ‘chirp-chirp’ sounds as they navigate using echolocation. 

Their nests are made entirely from their saliva and found in caves or tall buildings. They’re half-moon-shaped and super valuable in Asian markets. But no worries, their numbers are still solid across the island. 

8. White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus)

With its clean white chest and dark gray body, this one’s easy to recognize as it dashes across wetlands or low shrubs. 

This bird prefers wet environments, such as rice fields, ponds, and riverbanks. Active in the early morning and late afternoon, it snacks on bugs and water plants. Seems shy, but if it feels threatened? It’s got a surprisingly loud voice.

9. Pacific Swallow (Hirundo tahitica)

These birds have a red face and throat, a sleek body, and a short tail. You will spot them soaring over rice fields or rivers. They build their nests from mud, usually sticking them on walls or cliff faces. Definitely one of the easiest birds from Bali to find.

10. Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus)

Tiny, energetic, and everywhere—that’s the most common bird of Bali, the Tree Sparrow. You will see them hanging around parks, rooftops, and electric poles—pretty much anywhere. 

Look for their signature black cheek spots and brown “caps.” They live in flocks and are totally cool with humans.  

11. Common Iora (Aegithina tiphia)

If bright colors are your thing, meet your new fave, the Common Iora or Cipoh Kacat. Males sport bold yellow bellies with black accents during mating season, while females are more low-key. 

You will find them in shrubs, gardens, and light forests. The male’s aerial display is quite the show, because they flap and twist mid-air to impress the ladies. Small in size, but big on style!

12. Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis)

One of the most mysterious large birds in Bali, the Greater Coucal is characterized by its shiny black feathers, chestnut-colored wings, and fierce red eyes. You might see them sunbathing with their wings spread! 

They live in forests, farmland, and thick bushes, and eat everything from big insects to small reptiles.
