Southern Ground Hornbill Bali Bird Park: Caesar & Cleopatra

Southern Ground Hornbill Bali Bird Park: Caesar & Cleopatra’s Conservation Story

At Bali Bird Park, a new chapter of hope has begun for the Southern Ground Hornbill, one of the most unique and threatened bird species in the world. Today, two remarkable hornbills — Caesar and Cleopatra — stand at the heart of the park’s Fighting Extinction conservation program.

Meet Caesar & Cleopatra: A Conservation Partnership

Cleopatra, who arrived from Jatim Park, now lives beside Caesar, the long-term resident male at Bali Bird Park. Together, they represent a meaningful collaboration in the effort to protect this vulnerable species.

The Southern Ground Hornbill is known for its large body, long legs, powerful black bill, and distinctive facial wattles. Beyond their appearance, they are intelligent, social birds that can live up to 40 years in the wild. Their deep, echoing calls serve as communication and a way to mark territory.

A Special Moment: Nesting Season Begins

Today, Caesar and Cleopatra have entered their nesting phase. Cleopatra has settled comfortably inside the nest box. Meanwhile, Caesar displays a caring natural behavior bringing food to his mate throughout the day. This act shows loyalty, teamwork, and the strong pair bond that hornbills are known for.

However, their journey is not simple.
Southern Ground Hornbills reproduce very slowly. A pair may raise only one chick every nine years, making every nesting season both rare and extremely valuable. With habitat loss increasing across their range, their wild population continues to decline.

Supporting Conservation Through the Fighting Extinction Program

To give the pair the best chance to thrive, Bali Bird Park works closely with Jatim Park under the Fighting Extinction conservation program. Through routine monitoring, habitat improvement, and nutritional support, the team ensures that Caesar and Cleopatra receive the optimal environment to breed successfully.

Every day, the conservation staff checks nest conditions, observes behavioral changes, maintains humidity, and ensures food availability. These small but consistent actions hold great importance, as each step brings hope for the future of their species.

“Conservation is a long journey. Every action, no matter how small, helps protect the future of wildlife,” shared a member of Bali Bird Park’s conservation team.

Why Southern Ground Hornbill Conservation Matters

This species plays an important ecological role in the wild. They help control insect populations, disperse seeds, and maintain balance in the ecosystem. Protecting even one breeding pair helps secure the survival of future generations.

Because of their slow reproduction, losing even a few individuals in the wild can greatly affect population recovery. This is why conservation programs including breeding efforts at Bali Bird Park are essential.
